{"id":2576,"date":"2011-10-16T13:06:25","date_gmt":"2011-10-16T13:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sabbatical3.net\/blog\/?p=2576"},"modified":"2025-10-01T16:32:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T16:32:15","slug":"crossing-the-equator-to-singapore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sabbatical3.net\/blog\/?p=2576","title":{"rendered":"Crossing the Equator to Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sabbatical3.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/P1010287.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2578\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sabbatical3.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/P1010287.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a> Hannah prepares to be initiated into the Secret Society of Mariners who have Crossed the Equator on a Sailing Vessel<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are in Singapore.\u00a0 We left Belitong late in the afternoon of October 11 for a 44 hour sail to Sebangka Island.\u00a0 We rested for the night at anchor at Sebangka and then day sailed to Batam Island, rested for the night, and then sailed the remaining 9 hours to the Raffles Marina in Singapore, arriving yesterday (October 15) in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>At about 7 am on October 13, Sabbatical III crossed the equator just south of Kentar Island.\u00a0 The last time we were in the northern hemisphere was late March 2007 when we were a day away from the Galapagos Islands on the passage from Panama.\u00a0 It is a tradtion among mariners that those aboard must be initiated the first time they cross the equator by boat.\u00a0 At 7 am on October 13, the &#8220;tadpole&#8221;
